A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder following a house fire in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, that resulted in the deaths of a seven-year-old girl and her aunt. The fire occurred on August 26 at a residence on Birchington Avenue.

Jaden Wright, who has no fixed address, appeared before Teesside Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody ahead of a hearing at Teesside Crown Court scheduled for the following day. He faces two counts of murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent, and two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent. These charges relate to six individuals who were present in the house at the time of the fire, including two minors whose identities have not been disclosed by the media.

The victims who died have been named as Natalie McDonald, 34, and her niece Valentina Foster, aged seven. In addition to the two fatalities, four other people sustained injuries. Cleveland Police reported that a 48-year-old woman was being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and was in a critical but stable condition, while a 27-year-old man was receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital. Two teenage girls were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries and have since been discharged.

During the court hearing, it was also revealed that Wright faces a separate charge of intentional strangulation, alleged to have taken place the day before the fire. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
