Supreme Sha Tin, a recent entrant to the Hong Kong Premier League, has secured a surprising addition to their squad by signing former Spain international David Silva on a short-term contract. Silva, 40, retired three years ago following a distinguished playing career that included stints at Valencia, Manchester City, and Real Sociedad.
Silva, who amassed 125 caps for Spain and was a key figure in the national team’s victories at the 2010 World Cup and the European Championships in 2008 and 2012, is expected to make his debut for Supreme Sha Tin as early as next week. The club’s player-owner, Jim Wong Chi-chuen, indicated that Silva might appear in the October 18 match against Football Club at Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground. If that game comes too soon for the veteran midfielder, his debut could be on November 7 against BC Rangers at the same venue.
The signing is part of Supreme’s rapid ascent following their promotion to the Hong Kong Premier League. The club recently appointed English coach Tom Ballantyne as head coach, signaling their ambition to establish themselves among the top tier in local football. Wong, who took ownership of the team when it was known as Sun Source three years ago, has invested approximately HK$5 million, overseeing the club’s rise from the Third Division to the top flight in successive seasons.
Supreme’s entry into the Premier League has drawn significant attention. Their season opener, a 3-1 win over Eastern at Mong Kok Stadium, attracted over 3,000 spectators. The subsequent home match, a 3-0 defeat to Lee Man, drew 4,592 supporters, marking the highest attendance for a local league fixture since May 2023.
Silva’s arrival is notable given his recent history. The midfielder retired in the summer of 2023 after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during his tenure with Real Sociedad, where he played for three seasons following a decade at Manchester City. At City, Silva won four Premier League titles and two FA Cups, achievements somewhat overshadowed by the club’s recent penalty for multiple breaches of financial regulations.
Despite these developments, Silva remains widely regarded as one of the most technically gifted and creative players of his generation. His decision to join Supreme Sha Tin underscores the club’s ambitions and could provide a significant boost to the profile of the Hong Kong Premier League.
