A man died Thursday morning after a fire broke out in a Brooklyn apartment, officials said. The blaze began around 11 a.m. on the second floor of a two-story residence on Belmont Avenue near Atkins Avenue in the East New York neighborhood.

Approximately 80 firefighters responded to the scene and found a man, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, unconscious and unresponsive inside the building. Firefighters extinguished the flames within 35 minutes.

Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before noon. Authorities have not released his name.

Fire marshals are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
