A 57-year-old man was fatally dragged by a New York City subway train on Monday evening after the bag he was carrying became caught in the train doors, according to police. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at a Brooklyn subway station during the evening rush hour.

Authorities identified the victim as Yaw Boahene, a Brooklyn resident. Police said Boahene was exiting the train when his shopping bag snagged in the closing doors. As the train began to depart, he was pulled onto the tracks and struck by the train.

Responding officers found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive on the tracks and pronounced him dead at the scene. The medical examiner’s office will determine the official cause of death. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which operates the subway system, referred inquiries about the incident to the police. Dragging deaths are a rare but recurring occurrence within the nation’s largest subway network. In 2022, a similar fatality occurred when a 20-year-old commuter’s backpack or clothing caught in the doors as he attempted to board a train at the Columbus Circle station in Manhattan.
