During home renovations in Welton, East Yorkshire, a man uncovered a letter hidden inside a wall that had remained concealed for 71 years. The letter was discovered by Brendon Swallow after he removed a bookshelf and noticed the document embedded in the surrounding plaster.

The note was addressed simply to “the finder” and signed by Gordon Hopper, an electrician, who wrote it on March 1, 1955. In the letter, Hopper discussed various aspects of his life, including his wages, the weather at the time, his experiences serving in the Army, and his views on the political climate of the era.

Swallow has expressed an interest in tracing Hopper’s relatives to provide context for the letter and to share its contents with family members. He plans to contribute his own observations about contemporary events before resealing the letter for future discovery. “It would be fabulous to find out some more,” Swallow said, noting that he has begun following several leads and intends to conduct further research.
