Ruben Fregoso, 40, was arrested in Mexico over the weekend on suspicion of abducting his 5-year-old daughter and killing the child’s mother, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Authorities confirmed that Fregoso will be extradited to the United States to face charges related to the case.

Last month, Fregoso allegedly killed his 36-year-old girlfriend, Marysol Garcia, before taking their daughter, Daleza Fregoso, who is a U.S. citizen. The LAPD said the child was found safe and placed into the custody of Mexican officials. Authorities expect her to be reunited with family members in Los Angeles in the coming days while the extradition process proceeds.

The investigation began May 25, when law enforcement officers conducted a welfare check at a residence on the 2600 block of South Alsace Avenue in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles. Police discovered Garcia’s body inside the home; officials described her death as resulting from violence. The same day, an Amber Alert was issued for Daleza’s disappearance.

Following the alert, Fregoso's 2019 Land Rover Discovery was located abandoned near the U.S.-Mexico border. Details on the exact location and timing of Fregoso’s apprehension in Mexico were not immediately available.

While the LAPD identified the suspect as Ruben Fregoso, Los Angeles County prosecutors have filed charges under the name Ruben Fregosojuarez. He faces one count of murder and one misdemeanor count of child abuse under circumstances other than great bodily injury or death. If convicted, Fregoso faces a sentencing range of 25 years to life in state prison.

Authorities continue to coordinate with Mexican officials during the extradition process and emphasized the safe recovery of the child amid an ongoing investigation into the events leading to Garcia’s death and the abduction.
