A man in a wheelchair was struck and killed in a hit-and-run collision on Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach early Friday morning, authorities reported. The Long Beach Police Department responded to the scene near the intersection of East 7th Street and Pacific Coast Highway at approximately 12:35 a.m.

According to the police, a driver operating a white 2021 BMW was traveling southbound on Pacific Coast Highway when he struck the man, who was crossing eastbound in a crosswalk at East 7th Street. The victim was found unconscious on the roadway, and despite efforts by officers and Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the driver as 23-year-old Ethan Chung from Irvine. Investigators say Chung initially stopped after the collision but then fled the scene without providing aid. Law enforcement later located Chung and the vehicle near the intersection of 2nd Street and Pacific Coast Highway. He was taken into custody and booked at Long Beach City Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, with bail set at $50,000.

The victim’s identity was pending confirmation by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have stated that factors such as speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving do not appear to have contributed to the incident.

East 7th Street was temporarily closed in both directions between Bellflower Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway during the investigation, reopening around 7 a.m. Police have requested that anyone who witnessed the collision contact Detective Ashley Van Holland at the Long Beach Police Department.
