A 64-year-old man was injured Tuesday morning in an antisemitic attack in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City police said. The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of Kings Highway and Ocean Avenue, when the victim was shoved by a man who reportedly shouted antisemitic slurs during the assault.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Maimonides Midwood Community Hospital with injuries to his back and waist. The New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force has opened an investigation into the assault, which is being treated as a hate crime.

Law enforcement officials released images of the suspect on Wednesday. The individual was last seen fleeing the scene on foot, wearing a gray shirt and a red ballcap. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the attacker to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS; callers will remain anonymous.

Hate crimes in New York City have risen this year, with 322 incidents reported as of June 30, reflecting an 8 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to NYPD statistics. More than half of these hate crimes—over 55 percent—have targeted Jewish individuals.

The police department continues to prioritize the investigation and community safety amid growing concerns about hate-based violence in the city.
