A 37-year-old man was jailed Saturday after authorities charged him with pushing a 64-year-old painter onto the tracks of a Queens subway station in an early morning incident last month.
According to a criminal complaint, Terrell Jarrett entered the Parsons Boulevard station on the F train line by sneaking under a turnstile around 5:30 a.m. on May 31. Surveillance footage and witness accounts indicate Jarrett then approached Orlando Cabrera from behind while Cabrera was seated on a platform bench and pushed him onto the tracks.
Cabrera sustained a head injury requiring four staples, as well as multiple cuts to his face and arm. He described the attack as sudden and overwhelming, saying Jarrett “snuck up behind me and took me by surprise,” leaving him “bathed” in his own blood.
Video evidence reportedly captured Jarrett leaving the station roughly one minute after the assault. When police arrested him, they found a pipe containing crack cocaine in his possession. Jarrett was subsequently charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the assault. Cabrera’s injuries raised serious concerns given the dangers of subway tracks and the potential for more severe harm.
The case remains under investigation as prosecutors pursue charges aimed at addressing the violent nature of the assault and associated drug possession.
