A newlywed man from Punjab, India, was fatally attacked by his wife’s brothers after eloping and marrying against her family’s wishes, according to local reports. Jagjit Singh and Jashanpreet Kaur married in mid-July despite objections from her family.

Several days ago, Jagjit received a call from his mother-in-law, who was reportedly at a bus station near the couple’s residence and requested a pickup. When Jagjit arrived to meet her, he was ambushed by Jashanpreet’s brothers. The attackers stabbed and slashed him more than 80 times, leading to his death at the scene.

A bystander who attempted to intervene was injured but succeeded in restraining one of the assailants until police arrived. Authorities arrested the restrained individual on-site and are actively searching for the remaining suspect. Law enforcement is also investigating the potential involvement of the mother-in-law in orchestrating the attack. The case remains under investigation.
