A 71-year-old man was fatally struck early Thursday morning by a Tesla operating in full self-driving mode while crossing Interstate 80 in Vallejo, California, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The incident occurred around 2:35 a.m. when emergency responders were dispatched to the scene.

The Tesla, driven by a 26-year-old man from San Francisco, was traveling in the second lane at approximately 70 miles per hour. Preliminary CHP investigations indicate that the pedestrian entered the freeway from the right shoulder and proceeded to cross multiple lanes toward the center divide, coming directly into the Tesla’s path.

Despite the vehicle’s automatic braking and a maneuver to veer left, the Tesla struck the pedestrian with its right front section. Following the initial impact, it appears a second vehicle also hit the man after he fell onto the roadway. The CHP reported that the driver of the Tesla cooperated fully with the investigation and provided dashboard camera footage capturing the crash. The identity and response of the second driver remain under review, as authorities noted that the driver did not stop at the scene.

The CHP continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident, including pedestrian behavior and the performance of the Tesla’s autonomous driving system at the time of the collision.
