A man was fatally attacked by a Siberian tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster on Saturday after he reportedly climbed into the animal’s enclosure. Witnesses said the man had been dancing to music while wearing headphones and asked a visitor to take photos of him with the tiger in the background prior to the incident.
According to accounts from those at the park, the man was seen pacing along the viewing walkway that borders the two-acre tiger enclosure, which houses Altai, a Siberian tiger. Shortly afterward, he climbed over the barrier and entered the enclosure, where witnesses described unusual behavior including crawling in front of the tiger, praying, and speaking in an unidentified language. Some interpreted his actions as a deliberate provocation or an attempt to interact with the animal.
Video footage posted online captured bystanders attempting to distract the tiger by making loud noises as the man could be heard shouting “stop” and “no, no.” Park staff responded by deploying acoustic deterrents powered by gas canisters to scare off the tiger. The entire event lasted only a few minutes before emergency measures ended the attack.
Visitors present during the ordeal reported that a woman tried unsuccessfully to pull the man back over the barrier, and that he then jumped 12 to 15 feet into the enclosure. Some witnesses described his demeanor as "detached from reality" as the tiger began attacking him, with the animal eventually biting the man’s neck.
Following the incident, the park was closed and visitors evacuated. Staff members involved in the response received specialist support due to the traumatic nature of the event. Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which has been open since 2009 and spans 260 acres, confirmed the tiger, Altai, remains unharmed and will not be euthanized. The Siberian tiger is one of the largest wild cat species, with an estimated 500 individuals left in the wild.
South Yorkshire Police said the victim’s family has been informed and is receiving support. The park extended condolences to the man’s family and loved ones, expressing profound sympathy over the tragedy. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
