A court in Satkhira has sentenced Abdur Rouf Sardar to death for the murder of his wife and infant daughter amid disputes over dowry demands and family issues. The ruling was handed down on October 26 by Judge Md Zakaria Hossain of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, accompanied by a fine of Tk 50,000, according to Public Prosecutor Sheikh Alamgir Ashraf.
The case details indicate that Sabina Islam, 26, married Rouf approximately three and a half years prior to the incident. The couple had a daughter, Ayesha Siddika. Conflicts arose when Rouf allegedly demanded Tk 50,000, citing the need to pay for his mother’s medical treatment and to purchase a motorcycle. After these demands, Sabina returned to her parents' home with their child.
Despite the separation, Rouf maintained contact with his in-laws. On the night of September 7, 2015, he again visited the house and engaged in a heated argument with Sabina. Shortly after midnight, Sabina’s mother, Jahanara Khatun, discovered the bodies of her daughter and granddaughter in a neighboring room. Rouf had already fled the scene by that time.
Rouf was granted bail on July 30, 2020, but subsequently went into hiding and remains at large. The court’s sentence represents a significant legal response to this case involving dowry-related violence and the fatal consequences for two family members.
