A court in Narayanganj sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the rape of a 10-year-old girl that took place in 2022, while police in Tangail arrested another suspect in a separate sexual assault case involving a minor, officials said Wednesday.
Md Monir Hossain, 45, was convicted by the Child Violence Prevention Tribunal in Narayanganj for the attack in Bandar upazila's Kuripara area. The incident occurred on July 18, 2022, when the girl’s parents were reportedly away from home. In addition to the life sentence, the tribunal imposed a fine of Tk 5,000 on Monir. Should he fail to pay the fine, he will face an additional two months of rigorous imprisonment. The verdict was pronounced by Judge Md Mominur Islam in the presence of the accused, according to Inspector Abdus Samad, who oversees the court police outpost.
In a separate case in Tangail, law enforcement officials from the Special Response Battalion apprehended Md Suruj, 50, from Madhupur upazila. Suruj was accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl with a mental disability. According to the case statement, the suspect allegedly enticed the girl to his tea stall on September 24 and committed the assault there. He had been evading arrest since the complaint was lodged.
Both cases highlight ongoing concerns regarding the protection of vulnerable children from sexual violence in the region, prompting law enforcement agencies to prioritize swift action against perpetrators.
