A man was shot dead by police in regional New South Wales on Sunday afternoon after allegedly pointing a loaded rifle at officers attending the scene of a car crash. The incident occurred around 2:50 p.m. on a road approximately 84 kilometers north of Yass.

Officers responded to reports that a Chrysler station wagon had collided with a tree. Upon arrival, police found the driver unresponsive inside the vehicle. Authorities had received information indicating the man was armed and uncooperative with members of the public, prompting police involvement.

Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty said police attempted to communicate with the man to assess his condition and provide medical aid. When officers approached, the man reportedly raised the firearm and aimed it directly at them. Police then discharged their weapons, striking the individual multiple times.

The firearm was confirmed to be loaded. Police officers were described as being in close proximity to the car at the time of the shooting, and their initial intention was to reach the driver to offer assistance. Paramedics on site attempted first aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the location.

The man’s identity has not been formally confirmed, but he is believed to be approximately 45 years old and known to law enforcement, with a history of firearm-related offenses.

A crime scene was secured, and a formal investigation is underway. The incident will be independently reviewed by the professional standards command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
