A 62-year-old man was attacked while playing chess in Union Square on Sunday morning, according to law enforcement officials. The victim was seated at a table in the park's designated game area when an assailant approached from behind and slashed him, authorities reported. The attacker then fled the scene on foot.
Police said the motive for the assault remains unclear, and it is not known whether the incident was connected to the game of chess or if it stemmed from another cause. Emergency medical services transported the wounded man to Bellevue Hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition.
Investigators are continuing to gather information and review security footage as part of their ongoing inquiry into the incident. No arrests have been made at this time.
