A man who stabbed a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot by law enforcement officers on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, authorities said.

Deputies responded around 2 p.m. to reports of a person armed with multiple knives near the intersection of Lancaster Boulevard and Sierra Highway in an unincorporated area of the city. Upon arrival, the individual attacked one of the deputies with a knife, prompting the deputy to open fire, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The department reported a second deputy-involved shooting occurred shortly after the initial gunfire but did not provide details on the circumstances of the subsequent shooting.

The injured deputy sustained a knife wound and was transported to a hospital, where officials described the injury as non-critical. The suspect was also taken to a medical facility but was pronounced dead.

Neither the identities of the wounded deputy nor the suspect have been released. It remains unclear whether the deputy who was stabbed also fired the fatal shots.

Sheriff Robert Luna expressed relief that the deputy’s injuries were not life-threatening, emphasizing the unpredictable and dangerous nature of law enforcement work. “We are grateful that our deputy sustained non-life-threatening injuries and will be returning home to their loved ones,” Luna said in a statement.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau have initiated separate investigations into the shooting, as per department protocol. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office will review the case to decide whether any criminal charges should be filed and to assess the legality of the shooting.
