A man with a disability was killed Thursday during an Israeli military operation in southern Syria, according to Syrian state media. The incident occurred in the village of Jamla, located in Daraa province, where Israeli forces reportedly conducted an incursion involving strikes and sniper deployments.

Since the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israel has intensified its military activities in Syria. The Israeli military has carried out numerous airstrikes and ground operations, including repeated incursions into Syrian territory beyond the UN-patrolled buffer zone on the Golan Heights, which has separated Israeli and Syrian forces since 1974. Israel maintains a so-called “security zone” in southern Syria and has plans to establish a demilitarized area in the region.

Syria condemned the killing as a “crime” and a “grave violation” of international law. A statement from the Syrian Foreign Ministry accused Israel of targeting civilians, violating Syria’s sovereignty, and threatening regional security and stability. It called on the international community to pressure Israel to comply with international legal standards.

In addition to the fatal incident in Jamla, Syrian officials reported recent Israeli military actions in the neighboring Quneitra province, where several olive groves were uprooted near the village of Saida. According to local landowner Mohammad Ali al-Shaghla, Israeli tanks entered his property without warning, destroying about 400 olive trees across roughly 1.3 hectares. The area lies near the buffer zone where Israeli forces have been constructing fortifications.

Israel has not publicly commented on these specific incidents. Its military operations in Syria are often described by Israeli officials as measures to prevent the transfer of weapons to militant groups and to counter perceived threats near its northern border.

The situation in southern Syria remains tense, with ongoing clashes and military activities contributing to instability in the region. The divergent narratives underscore the complexity of the conflict and the broader geopolitical challenges facing Syria and its neighbors.
