A man armed with a machete was shot and critically wounded by police outside UCI Health in Los Alamitos, California, on Wednesday morning following a road rage incident that began in Long Beach, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 10 a.m. when the Long Beach Police Department responded to reports of a suspected DUI and road rage. According to police, the suspect was driving erratically and struck a Long Beach Fire Department vehicle transporting a patient before abandoning his car near the hospital and fleeing on foot.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Los Alamitos, Long Beach, and Cypress police departments, converged on the scene, establishing a perimeter around UCI Health. The hospital was placed on lockdown for several hours as SWAT teams and crisis negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation.

Despite negotiators' efforts, the suspect continued to threaten officers while wielding a machete. Video footage obtained from a public safety app captures a shirtless man aggressively confronting police, who initially fired less-lethal rounds in an attempt to subdue him. At one point, the suspect charged at officers before retreating behind several vehicles as gunshots were fired.

Authorities reported that multiple officers from two different agencies opened fire, striking the suspect. He was transported to a nearby trauma center where he remained in critical but stable condition and underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon, according to Robert Acosta, a spokesperson for the Los Alamitos Police Department.

None of the officers involved in the shooting were from the Long Beach Police Department, officials confirmed. The Orange County district attorney’s office had not commented on the incident as of Wednesday afternoon.

The investigation remains ongoing.
