Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily impairs movement and is most commonly observed among older adults, though it can also affect younger individuals. The precise cause of the disease remains unclear but is generally attributed to a combination of genetic predispositions and environmental influences.

The condition manifests through a range of motor symptoms that develop gradually and vary between individuals. Among the most prominent are tremors, muscle stiffness or rigidity, and bradykinesia, which refers to slowness of movement. These symptoms often make daily activities such as walking, dressing, eating, and writing progressively more difficult. In addition to motor challenges, Parkinson’s disease may present non-motor symptoms including fatigue, depression, anxiety, cognitive slowing, concentration difficulties, pain, tingling, constipation, dizziness upon standing, urinary issues, excessive sweating, and sleep disturbances—all of which can precede the onset of visible motor problems.

The disease results from the degeneration of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter critical for coordinating smooth and controlled movements. As dopamine levels diminish, patients experience worsening motor function, including increased stiffness and tremors.

While Parkinson’s disease currently has no cure, treatments are available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Pharmacological therapy plays a central role, with levodopa recognized as the most effective medication for motor symptom control. Since dopamine itself cannot cross the blood-brain barrier effectively, levodopa serves as a precursor that the brain converts into dopamine. To enhance its delivery and reduce side effects, levodopa is typically administered alongside carbidopa or benserazide. The medication helps alleviate slowness of movement and rigidity and may reduce tremors, although individual responses vary. Over time, some patients may experience fluctuations in symptom control and involuntary movements known as dyskinesia, especially younger patients and those on higher doses over long periods. Adjustments to dosage and timing are often necessary to optimize treatment, and patients are advised not to discontinue levodopa abruptly without medical guidance.

Other medications are also employed either alone or in conjunction with levodopa. Dopamine agonists such as pramipexole, ropinirole, and piribedil mimic dopamine’s effects and may delay motor fluctuations early in the disease course, though they are generally less potent than levodopa. Monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitors like selegiline slow dopamine breakdown, helping to prolong dopamine’s effect and potentially augment levodopa. Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors, such as entacapone, reduce levodopa metabolism to extend its action and decrease “off” time. Anticholinergic drugs may alleviate tremors but often cause side effects that limit their use, especially in older patients. Amantadine, originally an antiviral agent, is sometimes used to relieve symptoms and reduce levodopa-induced dyskinesia.

Patients and caregivers are urged to follow prescribed treatment schedules closely and to communicate any new or worsening side effects—such as involuntary movements, dizziness, excessive sleepiness, hallucinations, or behavior changes—to healthcare providers. Reporting all medications and supplements taken is also essential to avoid interactions.

Beyond medication, supportive care including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical activity, and nutritional support is recommended to maintain mobility, independence, and communication skills. Emotional and practical support from family and caregivers remains vital in helping individuals cope with the disease’s challenges.

Though Parkinson’s disease progresses differently in each person and currently lacks a cure, a tailored combination of medical treatment and supportive care can help manage symptoms effectively and sustain a meaningful quality of life. Close coordination with healthcare professionals enables patients and caregivers to make informed decisions throughout the disease’s course.
