The club’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, confirmed that key departures have left gaps in terms of experience following the exits of defender John Stones, midfielder Bernardo Silva, and defender Nathan Ake during the summer transfer window. In addition, former long-serving manager Pep Guardiola has also departed, ushering in a new era at the Etihad Stadium.
Maresca, 46, emphasized that while the squad does not urgently require extensive changes, the club is monitoring potential reinforcements. Director of football Hugo Viana and chief executive Ferran Soriano have accompanied the team on their tour of the Far East, engaging in ongoing discussions about the squad’s needs. “We are in communication every day,” Maresca said, “to see if we need to do something.”
Among the potential signings are Lille’s Moroccan midfield prospect Ayyoub Bouaddi, 18, whose arrival would add youthful promise rather than experience. Additionally, Maresca has been linked with bids for two players from Chelsea: French defender Malo Gusto, 23, and Portuguese winger Pedro Neto, 26.
One deal expected to materialize soon is the return of Argentine goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli to Manchester City from Marseille. Rulli, 34, previously spent the 2016-17 season at City and is set to serve as understudy to Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma. This move would likely facilitate England goalkeeper James Trafford’s permanent transfer to Leeds United. Maresca noted, however, that no contracts have been finalized yet, stating, “James is still a City player and Rulli is still a Marseille player so we’ll wait on the next days.” He also expressed enthusiasm about working with Donnarumma, describing him as “one of the best keepers in the world.”
Manchester City have been conducting their pre-season tour in Asia, recently arriving in South Korea after a stint in Hong Kong. They are scheduled to play two matches in Seoul, beginning with a game against the K-League All-Stars. However, they have suffered a setback as promising young winger Ryan McAidoo, 18, has been ruled out with a shoulder injury. The 18-year-old had impressed during a recent match against Inter Milan.
