Manchester City has renewed its interest in Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with discussions reportedly underway between the two clubs over a potential transfer before Tuesday’s deadline. The 27-year-old Dutch international, who joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, is said to be keen on a move to City despite signing a five-year contract with Liverpool just last year.

Sources indicate that Manchester City is preparing to make an offer in the region of £85 million to secure Gakpo’s services. The player, who has been primarily deployed on the right wing for Liverpool, contributed with an assist in the club’s recent 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest. This move comes amid Liverpool’s recent acquisition of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola for a reported £123 million, a deal that includes a £106 million guaranteed fee plus up to £17 million in performance-related add-ons. Barcola, who also plays predominantly on the left wing, is expected to fill a similar role to that occupied by Gakpo.

Tottenham Hotspur has also shown sustained interest in Gakpo throughout the summer, but the forward is reportedly more inclined to join Manchester City, which can meet Liverpool’s valuation. However, there are considerations regarding playing time, as City manager Enzo Maresca already has Jérémy Doku and Antoine Semenyo competing for wide positions. This may influence Gakpo’s decision, as regular first-team opportunities would be a priority.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s head coach Roberto De Zerbi has acknowledged that several players, including Richarlison, Kevin Danso, and Pape Matar Sarr, have expressed a desire to leave the club before the transfer window closes. None of these players were included in the squad for Tottenham’s recent game against Newcastle United. De Zerbi stated that while he maintains good relationships with them, any transfers would require the players to present a financially viable option for the club.
