Manchester City's unbeaten run at the start of the Premier League season came to an end on Saturday as they fell 2-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park. The defeat allowed Arsenal to draw level with City at the top of the table after their 2-0 win over Everton. Meanwhile, Tottenham secured a rare victory at Chelsea with a 2-0 result at Stamford Bridge, a significant outcome given the club’s difficulties at that venue in recent decades.

Aston Villa’s victory extended their recent dominance over Manchester City at Villa Park, where City have now lost for four consecutive seasons. Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Villa, continuing a strong run of form for the team under Unai Emery. The Senegal international capitalized early on a defensive error by Villa’s Marc Guehi to open the scoring within six minutes. Despite Erling Haaland’s header leveling the score early in the second half—his 13th goal in 10 games this season—Villa responded quickly. Gianluigi Donnarumma was unable to keep out Jackson’s low finish around the hour mark, securing the win for the home side. Notably, goalkeeper Zion Suzuki contributed with several important saves.

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who had matched the record for most consecutive wins at the start of a Premier League tenure with seven, acknowledged the team’s shortcomings in front of goal. “We lost because we probably are not being clinical enough in their box,” Maresca said. Villa’s squad has undergone significant changes since winning the Europa League last season, but Emery praised his players and the atmosphere at their home ground. “This is our fortress and the energy the supporters gave us was really fantastic,” he said.

Arsenal took advantage of Manchester City’s slip-up to reach 21 points from eight matches. Without the creative influence of Bukayo Saka, sidelined with a thigh injury, Arsenal relied heavily on set pieces to secure their 2-0 victory over Everton. Ezri Konsa opened the scoring early after Everton failed to properly clear a corner, while Gabriel Magalhaes added a second goal in the second half. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta highlighted the importance of converting set-piece opportunities. “That gave us the confidence and composure to go and dominate the game,” he remarked.

At Stamford Bridge, Tottenham ended a long-standing struggle to claim points against Chelsea, winning 2-0. The match was marked by challenging weather and late drama. On his first Premier League start, Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders inadvertently scored an own goal following a misjudged punch. Shortly afterward, Cole Palmer received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Chelsea down to ten men. Tottenham capitalized with Mathys Tel scoring the second goal. The win lifted Spurs out of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Fulham climbed out of the relegation places with a 1-0 victory at Coventry, courtesy of Oscar Bobb’s solo effort.

Looking ahead to Sunday, attention turns to Manchester United as they face Bournemouth. United, under manager Michael Carrick, are currently enduring a seven-game winless streak. This poor run has raised questions about Carrick’s future, just months after his appointment on a two-year contract following a successful interim spell.
