Manchester United is confronting a significant ticket touting issue after discovering that a single device had accessed 1,088 membership accounts, reportedly to facilitate resale operations. The club’s efforts to control unauthorized ticket sales have led to thousands of fans being locked out of their accounts amid suspicions of irregular activity.
In an attempt to curb ticket touting, Manchester United restricted access to any accounts where login credentials appeared to be shared among more than six users. However, reports indicate that the most sophisticated touts managed to circumvent these measures using advanced methods, leaving many genuine supporters frustrated.
Fan groups, including the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust, have been highly critical of the club’s approach, describing it as harsh. The Supporters’ Trust received a large volume of complaints from affected fans, which prompted the club to issue a detailed online update addressing the situation. In the 1,698-word statement, Manchester United acknowledged that its actions had caused “genuine upset and distress” among supporters. While the club did not offer a formal apology, it pledged to share the results of its ongoing investigation and expressed appreciation for the “feedback and challenge” from fans.
Manchester United emphasized its commitment to ensuring fair access to tickets for genuine supporters and to combatting organized touting and exploitation of the ticketing system. The club said it would continue efforts to protect fans and improve the ticketing experience.
In other developments, the club secured a record £20 million training kit sponsorship deal with gambling operator Betway, marking the largest agreement of its kind in world football. Additionally, Manchester United plans to appoint Eva Olid, former chief at Hearts, as manager of the women’s team, signaling ongoing investment in their women’s football program.
Manager Michael Carrick’s position appears strengthened following the new sponsorship deal and structural changes within the club’s broader operations. Manchester United continues to navigate both commercial growth and fan relations challenges amid a turbulent season off the pitch.
