Tensions have escalated within Manchester United’s boardroom amid disagreements over the potential replacement for head coach Michael Carrick. The club is currently facing internal unrest following a heavy Champions League defeat to Como, with captain Bruno Fernandes publicly critiquing Carrick’s tactics. Despite the criticism, Fernandes is not expected to face disciplinary action, and the club has confirmed that Carrick will remain in charge for the upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth.

Conflict is reportedly brewing between director of football Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell regarding the choice of a future manager should the club decide to make a change in 2026. Vivell is reportedly advocating for Julian Nagelsmann, who has been unemployed since a challenging tenure leading Germany’s national team at the recent World Cup. Vivell has previously worked with Nagelsmann at RB Leipzig and was also involved in evaluating him during his time as technical director at Chelsea.

Conversely, Wilcox, who holds a senior position above Vivell in the club hierarchy, seems to favour a candidate with established Premier League experience. Names reportedly under consideration include Eddie Howe and Fabian Hurzeler among others, reflecting a preference for proven success within England’s top division.

At present, Manchester United continues to back Carrick, but the ongoing dispute highlights deeper strategic differences within the club’s leadership about the direction of the team amid mounting pressure following disappointing performances.
