Manchester United manager Michael Carrick emphasized the importance of player autonomy following his team’s 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a pre-season friendly held in Gothenburg on Sunday.

The match began with PSG taking an early lead in the second minute when Ibrahim Mbaye converted a close-range cross from Dro Fernandez. Manchester United initially struggled to find their rhythm but gradually improved as the game progressed. Their efforts were rewarded in the 32nd minute when Bryan Mbeumo scored a low shot into the corner after a build-up involving Amad.

While United appeared the stronger side during the second half and created several scoring opportunities, including forcing PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov into notable saves, they were unable to secure a winning goal. Despite the draw, Carrick found encouraging signs in the team’s performance and approach.

Carrick underlined his intention to encourage his players to solve challenges on their own rather than relying on constant guidance. “It is good for the boys to problem-solve and find their own way, and I thought we did that,” he said. He added that by not providing all the answers, he aims to better prepare the squad for the demands of the upcoming season.

The draw against PSG marks one of Manchester United’s final preparations before the new campaign begins. Carrick’s remarks suggest a focus on fostering independence within the squad, emphasizing adaptability and resilience as key factors moving forward.
