Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos as part of their ongoing efforts to strengthen their midfield this summer. The 22-year-old Brazil international is valued at around £50 million and has emerged as a potential target for the club, which is seeking reinforcements following the departure of Casemiro.
Sources familiar with the situation indicate that any discussions between Manchester United and Chelsea are still at an early stage. The club had previously pursued other midfield options, including Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest and West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, but ultimately were unsuccessful, with Anderson moving to Manchester City and Fernandes joining Tottenham Hotspur.
United are cautious about overpaying in the transfer market after several costly and unsuccessful bids in recent years. This approach has led them to inquire about Santos, who is seen as a promising young talent with Premier League experience. Santos featured in 27 league matches for Chelsea last season, but started only 13 times. Since arriving at Stamford Bridge in January 2023 from Vasco da Gama for £17.5 million, he has also spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest and French club Strasbourg.
In addition to considering Santos, Manchester United have already secured one Brazilian midfielder this summer, completing a £35 million deal for Ederson from Atalanta. However, his signing has not been finalized due to his late participation in the World Cup.
As United continue to rebuild their midfield under the guidance of Michael Carrick, the addition of a player like Santos could provide much-needed depth and versatility. The club’s recruitment strategy appears focused on balancing youth potential with Premier League readiness, aiming to avoid the pitfalls of previous transfer windows.
