Luigi Mangione, 28, has admitted to stalking Brian Thompson, the chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare, and acknowledged shooting him in Manhattan, resulting in Thompson’s death. Mangione entered his guilty plea on Thursday in a federal court in Manhattan, addressing Judge Margaret Garnett directly, stating, “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died.”

Prosecutors said Mangione followed Thompson to UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference in December 2024, carrying a firearm he had manufactured using a 3D printer. The case has drawn attention due to the unusual method of weapon production and the high-profile victim.

Judge Garnett accepted the plea, and Mangione is scheduled to be sentenced on December 18. His defense attorney confirmed that there is no formal plea agreement with the federal government. Although Mangione has pleaded guilty to stalking charges at the federal level, he continues to face murder charges brought by the state, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

The defense has indicated plans to seek dismissal of the state murder case on double jeopardy grounds, arguing that Mangione cannot be prosecuted twice for the same conduct. The courtroom proceedings are ongoing, with further judicial decisions anticipated in the coming months.
