Authorities in upper Manhattan have arrested two groups of individuals involved in unauthorized entry into the city’s underground manhole systems in the Inwood neighborhood, police said. The actions come amid growing concerns about unexplained activity below the streets.

In one episode on the night of September 29, a witness reported seeing two people enter a manhole on Nagle Avenue near Dyckman Street at approximately 11:15 p.m. Police responded and detained a man found sitting in a nearby car. Further searches of the vicinity led officers to two additional men who appeared to be wet, resulting in their arrests.

The three individuals—identified as 23-year-old Wilfredo Teran Briceno, 33-year-old Guenis Martinez, and 24-year-old Xavier Guevara Lizcano—were charged with criminal trespass, according to authorities.

A separate incident occurred in the early hours of October 4, when a witness observed another pair of individuals accessing a manhole at West 218th Street and Indian Road. Police intervened and took those suspects into custody as well.

Officials have not released detailed information about the intentions behind these intrusions or whether they are connected to any broader pattern of activity. The arrests highlight concerns over unauthorized access to underground infrastructure in a part of Manhattan known for its complex network of utilities and transit tunnels.

Law enforcement continues to investigate these cases as they seek to ascertain the full scope and potential risks of the unauthorized entries.
