Indian fashion designer Manish Malhotra is aiming to expand his presence in Qatar, citing the country's appreciation for art, craft, and luxury as a fertile ground for increased Indian fashion and jewellery collaborations. Speaking at the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) 2026, Malhotra expressed his intention to introduce more collections featuring Indian craftsmanship, including lines inspired by Paris Haute Couture.

Malhotra, who is currently showcasing his Manish Malhotra High Jewellery collection at the event, praised Qatar for its warm hospitality and relaxed environment, describing his visit as particularly enjoyable. He noted that the atmosphere in Qatar is “very calming and hospitable,” encouraging him to plan further work involving Indian fashion and jewellery for local audiences.

One of the standout pieces in his DJWE presentation is the Hathphool, a traditional piece that Malhotra highlighted as highly popular. Actor Alia Bhatt wore the Hathphool during his recent runway show, and international singer Rihanna has also been seen wearing the design on multiple occasions. The piece was also featured during Paris Haute Couture Week, underscoring its international recognition.

Malhotra traced his connection to jewellery back to his early career as a costume designer beginning in 1990. He emphasized that throughout his work, accessories and jewellery have been integral to completing an actor’s overall look. He recalled spending significant time selecting and modifying jewellery to fit the aesthetic of his costume designs before collaborating directly with jewellers to craft custom pieces.

“For me, jewellery completes a look,” Malhotra said, adding that even simple attire can be transformed by the right jewellery, which he considers “the ultimate style maker.”

Although Malhotra had considered entering the jewellery sector for several years, the move materialized only recently due to his commitments in the fashion industry. His Manish Malhotra High Jewellery brand was launched three years ago and is managed alongside his niece, Riddhi Malhotra, whom he credits as a key partner in the venture.

Reflecting on Qatar’s cultural and artistic environment, Malhotra expressed a desire to return in the future. He singled out local museums as destinations he intends to explore and encouraged visitors to attend the DJWE, describing the event as "beautifully done."

Malhotra’s participation in the Doha exhibition highlights not only the showcase of high-end jewellery but also a broader ambition to promote Indian design, fashion, and traditional craftsmanship to an increasingly receptive audience in Qatar.
