Marc White, chairman and manager of National League South club Dorking Wanderers, is preparing his team for a crucial season with just eight days remaining before the campaign begins. Speaking ahead of their opening fixture against Dagenham and Redbridge at Meadowbank Stadium this Saturday, White expressed dissatisfaction following a 1-0 pre-season friendly loss to Dulwich Hamlet, urging his players to improve immediately.
White, 52, is known for his direct and passionate approach, delivering a firm message to his squad in a team meeting less than 72 hours after the defeat. He emphasized the club’s strong identity, describing the team as composed of “men, leaders and winners” and warned against repeating lackluster performances. Despite the intensity of his remarks, those familiar with White note that his passionate leadership style reflects his genuine commitment rather than a persona for media attention.
Dorking Wanderers have experienced a remarkable rise since their formation, securing 12 promotions in 23 seasons. The club has competed against established teams such as Wrexham and Notts County, even reaching the fifth tier before relegation back to the National League South. White highlighted the club’s transformation from a casual setup of friends to a professional organisation now aspiring to enter the English Football League (EFL).
Supporting the club's ambitions are American co-owners Frank Villares and Debra Tucker, who have joined White in seeking to emulate the rapid ascents of similarly positioned clubs like Wrexham, Stockport, Bromley, and Notts County. White acknowledged the challenges of progressing through the league system, citing the limited promotion spots and the potential for disappointment even after strong seasons. He remains confident, however, that reaching higher tiers is achievable and expressed a desire for the club to create new “headlines” and success stories.
Reflecting on the previous season, which concluded with a 4-2 defeat to Torquay, White admitted the campaign was mentally and physically taxing. He described football’s cyclical nature and the opportunity for renewal each season, stating that past setbacks would serve as motivation for future celebrations.
