Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is sidelined with a dislocated left elbow sustained during Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, prompting Marcus Mariota to step in as the starting quarterback for the team's upcoming home opener against the Seattle Seahawks. The injury occurred on the final play of the first half when Daniels, while retreating from the line of scrimmage, was stepped on by left guard Chris Paul. In attempting to brace his fall with his non-throwing arm, Daniels injured his elbow.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that Daniels underwent imaging on Monday, including an MRI, to assess the extent of the injury. While initial X-rays showed no fractures, the full severity remains undetermined pending consultations with specialists scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. Quinn declined to provide a specific timeline for Daniels’s return, emphasizing the need for thorough evaluation before making any projections. “I’d be guessing to give you any [timeline],” Quinn said, adding that no updates were expected until after the specialist reviews.
This is not the first time Daniels has experienced a similar injury. In November of last year, he dislocated the same elbow against the Seattle Seahawks while using his arm to brace a fall. He returned after just over a month but eventually aggravated the injury, which caused him to miss the remainder of the season. Quinn noted that at the time, there was neither discussion of surgery nor use of a protective brace. Reflecting on last season, he said, “Hindsight is awesome. I wish we had it on all things.”
In Daniels’s absence, Mariota, a veteran who started eight games for Washington last season during Daniels’s previous absence, will lead the offense. Mariota completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s loss to Dallas. Quinn praised Mariota’s leadership qualities, calling him “one of our greatest leaders” both on and off the field and highlighting the positive influence Mariota has on the team.
The coaching staff, including new offensive coordinator David Blough, does not anticipate significant changes to the offensive system with Mariota at quarterback. “It won’t be exactly the same, but fortunately there will be a lot of similarities,” Quinn said, noting adjustments will focus on highlighting Mariota’s strengths.
Rookie Athan Kaliakmanis will serve as Mariota’s backup, with no current plans by the Commanders’ management to acquire additional quarterbacks. The team now awaits further medical assessments to determine Daniels’s recovery trajectory as Mariota prepares for Sunday’s game against the Seahawks.
