Marcus Rashford has experienced a notable revival in form during his recent spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona, a development that has added an intriguing dimension to England’s attacking options ahead of the World Cup.
Rashford joined Aston Villa initially on loan from Manchester United, where under the management of Unai Emery he regained confidence and produced strong performances. Despite his resurgence, Villa were unable to meet the financial demands required to make the move permanent, with the £40 million transfer fee and wages exceeding £300,000 per week considered beyond the club’s means due to Premier League financial regulations.
Following his time at Villa, Rashford secured a season-long loan move to Barcelona last summer, reuniting with coach Hansi Flick and competing alongside top-tier talent. Rashford and his partner were warmly welcomed in Catalonia, integrating personally and professionally with the squad through social activities and bonding experiences, including outings hosted by defender Ronald Araújo and guidance from Robert Lewandowski. Rashford’s relationship with Barcelona coach Flick saw a brief setback after he was dropped for a training incident, but his overall impact was significant, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances and playing a key role in Barcelona securing the La Liga title.
This string of strong performances at the club level has created a competitive yet productive rivalry within the England squad, particularly with winger Anthony Gordon, who recently joined Barcelona for £63 million after the club declined to extend Rashford’s loan for an option reported at £26 million. England head coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the competitive environment positively, describing Rashford’s push for a starting role as beneficial for the team. Tuchel referred to Gordon as something of an “enemy” in the battle for the left-wing position but emphasized that the rivalry was on “a very respectful level.”
Despite Rashford missing a recent training match against Sporting Kansas City due to precautionary hamstring tightness, he returned to full training shortly thereafter. His sharp fitness and form were evident as he completed the season with Barcelona’s league and cup double at the Camp Nou before traveling early to Miami to acclimatize ahead of England’s tournament preparations.
Rashford’s club future beyond the World Cup remains uncertain. He has two years remaining on his contract with Manchester United, and while sources suggest that the club’s staff, including Michael Carrick, may advocate for his reintegration if his form continues, the possibility of another loan deal is also under consideration.
Within the England squad, perspectives differ on Rashford’s current performance level. Gareth Southgate, who left Rashford out of his Euro 2024 squad, indicated other players in England’s attacking area had outshone him recently. In contrast, Tuchel views Rashford as a key contributor, listing him among his core group of 14 to 15 big-game players integral to a revitalized and dynamic England team.
