Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca has affirmed that Jack Grealish remains part of his plans for the upcoming season, contingent on the forward’s fitness. The 30-year-old, who has not featured for City since May 2025, spent last season on loan at Everton before a foot injury necessitated season-ending surgery in February. Grealish did not join the squad on its pre-season tour to the Far East, prompting speculation about his future at the club.

Maresca, who succeeded Pep Guardiola in the summer, addressed these concerns by stating that while he had not communicated directly with Grealish during the tour, the player remains under contract with City. “When we are back in Manchester, if he is fit, he will work with us,” Maresca said, emphasizing that Grealish’s continued involvement depends on his recovery and readiness.

The new coach also discussed the situation of midfielder Mateo Kovacic, whose future at City is uncertain. Kovacic, 32, who has one year left on his contract, started in a pre-season friendly against Inter Milan in Hong Kong, a match City lost 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Having missed much of last season through injury, Kovacic has demonstrated his capabilities during the summer preparations. However, Maresca refrained from confirming whether Kovacic would be a key player for the season ahead, stating, “Mateo is our player, so while he is here I will do my best. It is my duty to make players better.”

Maresca also commented on promising young winger Ryan McAidoo, who impressed after coming on as a substitute during the same friendly. The 18-year-old is being carefully evaluated to determine the most suitable development pathway, with Maresca acknowledging both the player’s potential and the need for prudent management. “Since day one, he is the kind of winger I love,” Maresca said. “But he is young and he needs the right path.”

As Manchester City prepares for the new season, Maresca’s comments suggest a focus on player fitness and development, with uncertainty surrounding some squad members but a clear intent to integrate those ready to contribute.
