Marks & Spencer made a notable impact at this year’s London Fashion Week (LFW) with its first-ever runway show, marking a significant milestone in the retailer’s 100-year history of fashion. The event, held in London, underscored M&S’s transformation from a traditional high-street brand to a contemporary label offering stylish, accessible clothing in the high-fashion arena.
The show featured 59 womenswear and menswear looks, all available for immediate purchase through a “see-now, buy-now” approach, a departure from the typical fashion industry practice of delayed retail releases. This move resonated strongly with attendees, many of whom promptly selected pieces such as a black double-breasted tuxedo jacket and sparkly mesh ballet flats directly from the runway. Other popular items included a gunmetal grey tuxedo suit and a silver mesh knee-length party dress, garments that combined runway appeal with affordability.
This shift toward modernity is largely attributed to Maddy Evans, who joined as womenswear director in 2022 after her tenure as fashion director at Topshop. Under her leadership, M&S has attracted a new customer base, positioning itself as a viable destination for trend-conscious consumers rather than solely a purveyor of traditional or utilitarian apparel.
The show’s casting further emphasized the brand’s inclusive ethos. Models ranged in age from 21 to 60 and represented diverse body shapes, countering fashion industry norms that often favor younger, slimmer figures. The event also featured high-profile figures such as Karen Elson, who walked in a black sequin gown, and Erin O’Connor, wearing an oversized black satin puffer jacket. Among the attendees were notable guests including Lennon Gallagher in a tailored grey suit and his cousin Anais Gallagher in the front row.
Price points underscored M&S’s commitment to accessibility, with approximately half of the pieces priced below £50. This pricing strategy offered a contrast to many other LFW participants, whose runway items often carry significantly higher price tags. In the context of ongoing economic challenges, including the cost of living crisis and rising rents, M&S’s approach delivers fashionable options that are both desirable and financially attainable.
By combining glamour with affordability, M&S’s debut runway event has set an example within the fashion industry, demonstrating the potential to balance style with accessibility at a time when consumers face heightened economic pressures.
