Defending world champion Marc Marquez won the Japanese MotoGP race on Sunday, narrowing Jorge Martin’s overall championship lead to just two points with six rounds remaining in the season. The race took place at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan.

Marquez, a seven-time world champion, started behind pole-sitter Martin but overtook his fellow Spaniard midway through the race, specifically on lap 11. After taking the lead, Marquez steadily increased his pace, enabling him to finish the final laps more comfortably. This victory followed his win in Saturday’s sprint race, securing maximum points over the weekend.

“The race was tough, especially when I was behind Jorge, but I knew that if I was able to lead the race the pace was good,” Marquez said after the event. He also introduced a new pre-race warm-up ritual of doing press-ups on the track before the start, which appeared to be part of his preparation for this successful outing.

Martin acknowledged Marquez’s strong performance, calling him the better rider on the day. Despite Martin’s efforts and feeling confident with his bike setup, he admitted winning was difficult. “It was one of the days when I rode almost perfectly, I was really smooth, really confident, and even then I couldn’t win,” he said. Martin remains optimistic about his chances, stating he still has “a good package to fight for the rest of the season.”

Italian rider Marco Bezzecchi finished third for the race, fending off a challenge from fellow Italian Enea Bastianini. Bezzecchi’s third-place finish allowed him to maintain a position in the championship, though he fell further behind the two Spanish riders who are battling for the lead.

Marquez’s victory is notable given that he missed two races earlier this season in Le Mans and Catalonia due to surgeries on his foot and shoulder. The weather in Japan was initially sunny but clouded over and cooled shortly before the race; however, rain stayed away, allowing for dry track conditions throughout the contest.

With the championship race tightening, Marquez’s win at Motegi has set the stage for a closely contested final stretch of the MotoGP season.
