A 35-year-old married female teacher was sentenced to nine years in prison for committing sexual offences against a 15-year-old female student at multiple locations, including their school, a karaoke and bistro, and on a public bus. The offences occurred between October 13 and November 21, 2023. The defendant, who has a four-year-old child, pleaded guilty to two counts of performing an indecent act on a minor and one count of sexual penetration. Seven additional charges, including exchanging sexually explicit audio recordings with the victim, were taken into account during sentencing.

Due to a court-imposed gag order to protect the identity of the victim, details regarding the teacher and the school are restricted. Court documents reveal that the student, who was in Secondary 3 at the time, had experienced family difficulties and struggled with mental health issues. Child Protective Services had previously intervened due to the girl’s history of harsh physical punishment by her parents. The victim was also admitted to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) from October 27 to November 3, 2023, following self-harm incidents and suicidal ideation.

Deputy public prosecutors Selene Yap and Yeo Kee Hwan noted that the teacher became responsible for instructing the girl in one of her subjects in 2023. The victim sought support and guidance from the teacher beginning in April that year, frequently communicating via text about her personal struggles. Their relationship escalated into what the victim described as a "situationship," involving a series of sexual encounters and the exchange of at least three sexually explicit audio recordings.

The first encounter occurred on October 13, 2023, in a private room at a karaoke and bistro. Despite the teacher’s indication that they should end the relationship that weekend, the pair resumed contact and engaged in sexual acts in a single-cubicle staff toilet on school grounds on October 16. On November 7, the teacher performed a sexual act on the student on the upper deck of a double-decker public bus. Their final encounter happened on November 21 at a "chill out" facility, during which the victim penetrated the teacher.

The relationship ended for reasons not disclosed in court. The student reported the sexual abuse to a school-appointed safety adult and year head on January 16, 2024. The school vice-principal subsequently accompanied her to a police station to file a report. The teacher was arrested two days later on January 18.

Following the disclosure, the victim underwent outpatient treatment at IMH and was diagnosed with adjustment disorder. A subsequent evaluation at the Child Guidance Clinic on August 26, 2024, found symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including emotional numbness, anger, difficulty focusing in class, trust issues, and academic decline.

The teacher, who has been suspended from duty since January 2024 and is no longer teaching, was represented in court by lawyer Kailatashan Karuppaya. During sentencing, District Judge Paul Chan acknowledged the teacher’s "many redeeming qualities" but emphasized the need for rehabilitation to benefit both her family and the wider community.

The Ministry of Education stated it takes staff misconduct seriously and will take disciplinary measures, including dismissal, against any personnel who violate professional standards of conduct.
