Trainer Grahame Begg has confirmed that jockey Taylor Marshall will ride King Zephyr in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday. Marshall, who recently captured the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap aboard Spicy Martini, replaces Jordan Childs, who opted to ride elsewhere due to weight concerns.
Begg, based in Cranbourne, secured Marshall last week anticipating the minimum 54-kilogram handicap weight for King Zephyr, allowing Marshall to ride as a natural lightweight. Childs was initially offered the ride but declined, preferring to compete at Flemington where he can better manage weight requirements.
King Zephyr enters the race following a sixth-place finish carrying 56 kilograms in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap (1500m) at Eagle Farm, behind horses War Eternal and Sun God. The form was strengthened when Sun God subsequently outperformed War Eternal in the Listed Tattersall’s Mile at Eagle Farm last Saturday.
Begg expressed satisfaction with King Zephyr's condition and emphasized the decision to wait for this race rather than entering last week’s event, noting the Sunshine Coast’s 1400-meter distance better suits the horse and affords additional time for the track to improve.
Track conditions are expected to ease ahead of the race. The Caloundra surface was rated Heavy 8 recently, but favorable weather forecasts suggest the ground will dry. While King Zephyr has demonstrated capability on rain-affected ground—as evidenced by a past placing at Sandown behind Meridius—his six career victories have come exclusively on Good tracks. Begg noted a preference for firmer ground, stating that the big, sweeping circuit at the Sunshine Coast aligns well with King Zephyr's racing style.
