Celtic suffered a rare defeat as they were beaten 2-0 by Falkirk in a Scottish Premiership match on Saturday, marking the first time the Bairns have defeated the Hoops since March 2007. The result ended a long-standing winless streak for Falkirk against Celtic, giving them a boost as they moved up to fourth place in the league standings. Despite the loss, Celtic remain top of the table, maintaining a four-point lead over second-place Rangers, who have a game in hand.
Falkirk took an early lead in the third minute when Cameron Carter-Vickers failed to clear a cross from substitute Ryan Strain, allowing Ethan Ross to capitalize on the error and score. The visitors struggled to recover momentum as Scott Tanser doubled Falkirk’s advantage in the 38th minute, breaking through the defense and finishing with a low drive. Falkirk goalkeeper Scott Bain played a key role throughout the match, making numerous saves to deny Celtic multiple scoring opportunities, including three crucial stops against Camilo Durán in the first half.
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill expressed frustration over the defensive lapses that led to both goals, describing them as “very poor” from his side’s perspective. However, he also praised his team’s overall play, noting their persistence and the difficulty of the playing surface. O’Neill acknowledged Bain’s performance as “magnificent” and emphasized the need for his team to remain focused despite the setback, highlighting Celtic’s resilience in previous seasons when overcoming challenging league positions.
Falkirk manager John McGlynn credited Bain with producing the “game of his life,” suggesting the goalkeeper’s heroic effort was instrumental in securing the victory. McGlynn further recommended Bain for a potential Scotland national team call-up, emphasizing the quality of his contributions in the match.
The match also featured a disallowed goal for Falkirk in the second half, with VAR ruling a handball by Jacob Murrell after what initially seemed to be a third goal. Despite that, Falkirk maintained their lead and limited Celtic’s chances in the closing stages.
Elsewhere in Scottish football, Hibernian secured a 2-1 victory over Hearts in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final at Hampden. After falling behind to an early goal from Hearts’ Cláudio Braga, Hibernian rallied with Martin Boyle and Jamie McGrath scoring to clinch the win. This marked Marink Reedijk’s first win as Hibernian head coach, setting up a final against Rangers on December 13.
