Martin Thacker MBE has been appointed as the new independent chairman of the Northern Premier League, taking over from Mark Harris effective November 1. Thacker, currently a director of the National League, will step down from his existing roles within the National League, including trustee of the National League Community Trust and member of the National League Academy, to focus on his new position.

Thacker brings a broad background in football administration, governance, business leadership, and public service to the role. He previously served as vice-chairman and director of Chesterfield FC and has extensive involvement in community football and governance matters. His appointment comes after a comprehensive recruitment process managed by a panel representing the Northern Premier League, Isthmian League, and Southern League.

In his statement, Thacker acknowledged the league’s responsibilities to its 88 member clubs and emphasized his intention to work closely with the board, executive team, and clubs to foster the league’s continued development. He highlighted priorities such as strengthening governance, advancing strategic objectives, and ensuring that the voices and experiences of member clubs remain central to the board’s activities.

Angie Firth, CEO of the Northern Premier League, praised Thacker’s expertise and approach, noting that he stood out during the interview process. His leadership is expected to contribute to ongoing efforts to support and enhance the league’s position within the English football pyramid.
