As the new "Spider-Man" film aims for a strong debut at the weekend box office, discussions about the franchise’s future are already underway. Due to the unique arrangement between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, which share the rights to the character, any decision on subsequent installments requires close coordination between the two companies.
A source familiar with Sony’s approach confirmed that the agreements governing "Spider-Man" movies are negotiated on a film-by-film basis rather than through long-term contracts. Back in 2019, the franchise briefly faced uncertainty until actor Tom Holland, who portrays Peter Parker, played a key role in facilitating a renewed partnership. Given the ongoing success of these collaborations, industry observers widely expect a fifth "Spider-Man" film to be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, on the streaming front, Disney+ recently made the unexpected move to cancel the Marvel series "Wonder Man," despite having previously renewed it for a second season earlier this year. The show was co-created by director Destin Daniel Cretton, who also helmed "Spider-Man: Brand New Day." The cancellation sparked speculation that Cretton might be shifting focus to direct the next Spider-Man installment. Cretton has indicated that a sequel to his 2021 Marvel film "Shang-Chi" is currently in active development.
Tom Holland has expressed a willingness to continue his role as Spider-Man but acknowledged that plans are already in place for his eventual departure from the character. Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Holland said that the transition “is laid out” and suggested the role will eventually be handed off to a new actor.
Marvel’s latest "Spider-Man" release, "Brand New Day," could inject fresh momentum into the studio’s slate. Since the conclusion of the "Avengers: Endgame" storyline, Marvel’s releases have seen mixed commercial and critical reception, leading to a perception that the once-dominant brand is experiencing a period of stagnation. A strong box office showing for "Brand New Day" would be particularly welcome ahead of the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday," scheduled for release this winter following a relatively disappointing 2025, where all three Marvel films underperformed to varying degrees.
