A Maryland man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Delaware woman whom he reportedly mistook for a deer. Walter Moorhead, 74, was arrested Friday evening in Ellendale, Delaware, after authorities said he accidentally shot Santos Maria Chilel Soto, 39, a mother of five.

Delaware State Police reported that the incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. as Soto was walking through an open field alongside a man and two children. Moorhead, who was hunting deer from a blind nearby, allegedly saw what he believed to be a deer and discharged his rifle, striking Soto. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moorhead, a resident of Salisbury, Maryland, was charged with manslaughter and additional weapons offenses. Authorities said the shooting was accidental. Efforts have been launched through a GoFundMe campaign to assist with transporting Soto’s body back to Guatemala, where she was originally from.

The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to gather details surrounding the tragic event.
