Masked burglars carried out a swift theft at the Musée Lalique in eastern Alsace on Sunday morning, making off with approximately 20 pieces of jewellery valued at several million euros. The museum, which showcases works by the renowned luxury glassmaker René Lalique and his family, confirmed that the items were stolen within a very short time frame.
The heist follows a similar incident at the Louvre Museum in Paris last October, where thieves also targeted valuable jewellery collections. Although several suspects were arrested in connection with the Paris theft, none of the stolen items have been recovered to date.
Security systems at the Musée Lalique were triggered during the raid, and staff quickly assessed the extent of the loss. Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
René Lalique, who passed away in 1945, was celebrated for his Art Deco designs featuring materials such as glass, enamel, horn, ivory, and semi-precious stones. The Musée Lalique’s collection highlights his innovative craftsmanship and that of his family members, making the stolen pieces culturally significant.
Authorities have not released information on any suspects linked to the recent Alsace theft, and investigations continue as they seek to recover the jewellery and identify those responsible.
