Shan Masood played a key role in Pakistan’s strong response to the West Indies’ first innings total of 311 during the first Test match at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on Sunday. At the close of the second day, Pakistan reached 199 for three, with Masood unbeaten on 88 and opening partner Imam-ul-Haq contributing 63.

West Indies had been in a solid position at 194 for three overnight, but Pakistan’s seamers, led by Mohammad Ali who took four wickets, wrested control of the day after a less effective bowling performance on the opening day. The visitors capitalized on this momentum to trim the hosts’ lead.

Masood, recently relieved of his captaincy following a 2-0 series defeat in Bangladesh in May, displayed composure and skill during his innings. The 36-year-old faced 137 deliveries, connecting cleanly for 11 boundaries. Although he faced a moment of uncertainty late in his innings, Masood managed to hold firm as Pakistan looked to rebuild.

Imam-ul-Haq also contributed significantly at the top of the order, helping to steady the innings and keep Pakistan on track in the pursuit of erasing the deficit. The partnership between Masood and Imam was pivotal in shifting the momentum in Pakistan’s favor by the end of day two.

As the match progresses, Pakistan will aim to build on this foundation to challenge the West Indies and set up a favorable position in the opening Test of the series.
