Massachusetts athletes delivered strong performances at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor, held from Thursday through Sunday at the University of Pennsylvania, securing three national titles and multiple record-breaking efforts.
Lexington senior Ainsley Cuthbertson capped a hectic weekend by winning the high school national championship in the hammer throw. After setting a new state record of 179 feet earlier Friday morning at the under-20 US outdoor championships in Eugene, Oregon, she traveled overnight to Philadelphia. Cuthbertson improved on her mark with a winning throw of 180 feet, 4 inches on her fifth attempt during the nationals competition Saturday morning, comfortably outdistancing runner-up Avery Brunner of Pittsford, New York, who threw 177 feet, 5 inches.
“It just feels so satisfying to have all your work pay off,” Cuthbertson said, noting that her season objectives were to claim a national title and compete at the U-20 championships.
Catholic Memorial junior Amar Skeete secured the triple jump title Saturday with a leap of 50 feet, 7¼ inches, edging out Ashton Thomas of Webster, New York, who recorded 49 feet, 8½ inches. Skeete’s victory completed an undefeated season, although his best jump remained the state record of 51 feet, 2 inches set earlier at the MIAA meet of champions.
In the boys’ shot put on Friday, Massachusetts athletes demonstrated depth as Cohasset junior Nicholas Askjaer clinched first place with a final toss of 64 feet, 1 inch, while Oliver Ames junior Mitchell Callender took second at 62 feet, 8½ inches. Askjaer also improved his personal best in the discus Thursday, placing fifth with a throw of 196 feet, 6 inches.
Westford senior Abby Hennessy posted an impressive performance in the girls’ mile on Saturday, taking the lead at the halfway point and battling Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Mallory Weller before finishing second. Both athletes surpassed the previous meet record, with Weller finishing in 4 minutes, 31.78 seconds and Hennessy recording 4:33.18. Hennessy’s time also improved upon her own state record of 4:34.69, set in third place at last year’s nationals.
Abington junior Aiden Calcano Da Silva, undefeated during the MIAA season in the 400-meter hurdles, placed third on Friday with a personal best of 51.96 seconds.
Other notable individual finishes included Newburyport senior Michael Mohoric’s fourth-place in the boys’ mile (4:04.55), after leading early in the race, and Wayland senior Ryan McCormack’s fifth-place finish in the decathlon with 6,643 points.
Massachusetts teams also excelled in relay events, setting two state records. On Sunday, Westford’s distance medley relay squad of seniors Hennessy and Emily Wedlake and sophomores Emily Deeks and Diya Shrestha placed second in 11:36.71, breaking a 16-year-old state record of 11:44.77. Earlier in the week, Lexington’s girls’ mile relay team—junior Callie Glenn and sophomores Janie Conrad, Ella Tyson, and Amelia Whorton—finished fourth in 20:20.53, eclipsing a 17-year-old state record of 20:23.20.
