A National League match between Forest Green and Barrow was abandoned just 14 minutes after kickoff due to a heavily waterlogged pitch at the Furness peninsula venue on Saturday.
Referee Stuart Morland made two inspections of the playing surface before the 3 p.m. start, with the second check occurring approximately 45 minutes prior to kickoff. Despite persistent rain and saturated conditions that left the ball struggling to roll in certain areas, Morland decided to proceed with the match. Increased rainfall during the early stages exacerbated the poor pitch conditions, eventually forcing the referee to halt play.
The decisive moment came when a back pass from Forest Green defender Marcel Oakley to goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom came to a complete stop in the thick mud, prompting Morland to abandon the contest.
Forest Green head coach Yan Klukowski, who handed a debut to striker Will Grigg, expressed frustration with the decision to start the game. “It was the right decision but farcical in the end. The game should never have started,” Klukowski said, noting that even during the warm-up it was clear the ball was not moving properly. He added that Morland had expressed concern about the surface during his early inspections and warned both teams before kickoff that he would “give it a go” despite reservations.
Barrow manager Adam Murray acknowledged his team’s disappointment but agreed the abandonment was necessary. Barrow took an early lead with a remarkable goal from captain Isaac Marriott after just 14 seconds. Murray said, “Credit to the referee, he gave the game every chance,” and recognized that worsening conditions made the match unplayable. “We felt this would be a good game for us and knew how to hurt the opposition, which showed from the first minute,” he added, though conceding both teams had begun to anticipate the stoppage.
Shortly after Marriott’s opener — which would ultimately be removed from official records — Barrow had another scoring opportunity when Seb Thompson’s shot was saved by Forest Green goalkeeper Luke McNicholas. Forest Green’s Sean Etaluku came close to equalizing before the match was halted, but his attempt went wide.
Both coaches concurred that while the referee’s communication was effective, the decision to attempt to start the game was questionable given the pitch’s condition. Ultimately, player safety and fair competition considerations led to the early abandonment of the fixture. Rescheduling details have not yet been announced.
