Lothar Matthäus, Germany’s record international and 1990 World Cup-winning captain, has drawn parallels between Jürgen Klopp and legendary football figure Franz Beckenbauer, highlighting their shared charisma as a key asset for the national team coach position. Matthäus made these observations in a recent column, emphasizing the similarities in personal qualities and leadership styles that could bode well for Klopp as he assumes the role.

According to Matthäus, both Beckenbauer and Klopp are defined by their charisma and international appeal, alongside attributes such as authenticity, reliability, and a clear sense of direction both on and off the pitch. Beckenbauer, who guided Germany to World Cup victory as a player in 1974 and later as a coach in 1990, had established himself as an icon before taking over the national team in 1984. Matthäus suggested that Klopp, although lacking the same level of player pedigree, has earned significant respect through his coaching achievements at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

Matthäus further noted that Klopp is arguably more prepared for the head coach role than Beckenbauer was when he took charge in 1984. He pointed out that Beckenbauer never obtained a formal coaching license, relying instead on a strong supporting staff to manage training and drills while he focused on strategy and tactics. Matthäus expects a similar structure to be in place under Klopp’s tenure.

The former midfielder also commented on Klopp’s popularity with fans, attributing it to his journey as a player who was not naturally gifted or overwhelmingly successful but who nonetheless rose to the highest levels of coaching through dedication and hard work. This narrative, Matthäus suggested, resonates with supporters who see Klopp as embodying the aspiration of ascending through merit and perseverance.

Klopp is set to replace Julian Nagelsmann as the head coach of the German national team, embarking on a new chapter where his leadership style and personal appeal will be closely watched in the quest to restore Germany’s international standing.
