Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle emphasized the importance of securing a victory in their upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Everton as a means to alleviate mounting pressure. Having taken charge of the club three months ago, Jaissle has quickly come to understand that results heavily influence the scrutiny he faces. After a challenging start to the season marked by three defeats in four Premier League matches, Newcastle secured a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on Sunday, a result that Jaissle said brought a noticeable shift in atmosphere.
The 38-year-old German coach remarked that the post-match press conference following the Palace victory was significantly shorter, highlighting how success reduces external questioning. He acknowledged that although the team is showing progress, continued development is necessary, particularly in training, where he likened the current stage to summer or pre-season as they work to instill foundational principles.
Jaissle warned that the lineup fielded against Everton in the Carabao Cup fixture would differ considerably from the squad that lost 3-1 to the same opponents in a pre-season friendly earlier this year, shortly after his appointment. He noted that confidence within the squad is growing thanks to recent wins, but improvement remains an ongoing process.
While Newcastle will face Everton again in the Premier League at St James’ Park on Monday, Jaissle clarified that the cup match would not be treated as secondary. Citing Newcastle’s historical success in the competition, including their 2025 victory, he affirmed the club’s intention to field their strongest possible team in pursuit of further progress.
