Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has criticized the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, ahead of the US Grand Prix, citing concerns over the track’s condition and its impact on driver safety. Verstappen described the surface as excessively bumpy, stating that the unevenness is causing damage to his spine and posing a significant challenge to competitors.
Verstappen, 29, said he and other drivers have formally raised complaints with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the sport’s governing body, requesting a more comprehensive solution to the problem. However, he indicated that their concerns have yet to be addressed adequately. “The bumps are unacceptable,” Verstappen said. “Over time they have found a bit of a solution here and there, but it’s just putting a plaster over the bigger problem.”
He noted that while the circuit remains one of his favorites and praised the venue and the city of Austin, the track’s surface condition is “out of control.” Verstappen suggested that the soil beneath the track, situated on marshland, requires more substantial reinforcement. He acknowledged that resurfacing the track fully would entail significant expenses and time but insisted it was necessary to resolve the ongoing issues.
The Circuit of the Americas, located approximately 15 miles southeast of downtown Austin, opened 14 years ago and was designed by German architect Hermann Tilke. Over the years, drivers have frequently voiced concerns about bumps and surface irregularities at the venue, but this year’s complaints appear particularly pointed.
Meanwhile, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, 20, has an opportunity to strengthen his lead in the Formula 1 World Championship at this weekend’s race. Currently holding a 102-point advantage, Antonelli could extend this to 125 points, with five races remaining in the season, bolstering his title chances.
The US Grand Prix qualifying session is scheduled for 10 p.m. local time tonight, with the race set to begin at 8 p.m. tomorrow. Both events will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1.
