Max Verstappen secured his first victory of the 2026 Formula One season at the Bahrain Grand Prix, held at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. The race, relocated from Bahrain due to ongoing conflict in Iran, marked the first F1 event at Sepang since 2017.

Verstappen, a four-time world champion, ended an extended winless stretch in a race that significantly impacted the championship standings. With five laps remaining, George Russell, driving for Mercedes, was forced to retire, which provided a critical advantage to Kimi Antonelli, Verstappen’s closest title rival.

Antonelli, who finished second, extended his lead over Russell from 66 to 84 points with seven races left in the season, including upcoming rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. Following their retirements and position changes, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton overtook Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar to claim third place on the podium.

The unexpected turn of events under the safety car highlighted the shifting dynamics in the 2026 title race, with Antonelli now holding a commanding lead. The remaining races will be pivotal as Verstappen seeks to close the gap and reclaim his position at the top of the standings.
